Overordnet set er en kloakrensning af mildere karakter sammenlignet med en kloakspuling og slamsugning. Sidstnævnte kan betegnes som den mest overordnede løsning – men også den kraftigste.

Hvor en kloakrensning og en kloakspuling går mere detaljeret til værks, er slamsugerens opgave at fjerne, løsne, rense og suge al den masse, der skaber problemer i kloakken. Det betyder, at en slamsugning er en god løsning til fedtbrønde, fedtudskillere og lignende, der har store mængder af fedt og olie.

En kloakrensning og en kloakspuling er altså ofte gode og effektive løsninger, hvis kloakproblemet er af mildere karakter. Er problemet derimod større, kan en slamsugning være den rette løsning.
